Christianity Today states that “There has never been a more articulate champion of classic Christian orthodoxy, virtue, and decency than this rotund jouster whose words were his weapons.” Chesterton in his preface summarizes the purpose of the book, “The book is therefore arranged upon the positive principle of a riddle and its answer. It deals first with all the writer’s own solitary and sincere speculations and then with all the startling style in which they were all suddenly satisfied by the Christian Theology. The writer regards it as amounting to a convincing creed.”

This is part of Hewitt’s Lightning Literature & Composition: British Christian Authors curriculum. From our Guide by Lucy S. R. Austen:

Orthodoxy was written while Chesterton lived in London and published in 1908, the year before he moved to Beaconsfield. This book is Chesterton’s philosophical autobiography, written after he became a Christian and before he became a Catholic; and it lays out what he believes and why he believes it, in the same order in which he came to believe it. Though it is not ostensibly written to persuade readers to the same belief, Chesterton’s systematic demolishing of all other modern philosophies certainly wasn’t calculated to leave his readers sitting placidly in disbelief.
