Malgudi is an imaginary city which R. K. Narayan brings to life by portraying all kinds of people, drawn in full colour and endearing domestic detail. He describes how in India the story writer has a limitless amount of material available since every individual differs from every other individual, not only economically, but in outlook, habits, and day-to-day philosophy. The writer has to only look out the window to find a character and thereby a story. These thirty-some tales includes a snake-charmer, a postman, and a vendor of pies.

Malgudi Days is a beautiful selection of Narayan’s short stories. Please read the whole book, beginning with the Author’s Introduction. Malgudi is Narayan’s own creation, a town in South India (based loosely on Mysore City) where most of his stories and novels take place. A map of this imaginary town is included on pages 10-11, as well as a list of Malgudi’s historical/mythological past. Many of the characters Narayan has created appear in more than one book or story. ‘The Talkative Man,’ for instance, has his own novel, but also narrates several of the stories in this collection.
