Students read a variety of speeches from ancient to modern times, all contained in the book Lend Me Your Ears: Great Speeches in History. Lessons are on opening and concluding a speech, content, audience, research, choosing words, style, and organization. Although this class is geared primarily towards writing speeches, tips for giving speeches are also included.
The Student’s Guide includes comprehension questions, writing exercises, reading lists, semester and full-year schedules, and bibliography. The answers to comprehension questions are in the Teacher’s Guide (see Related items below). Lend Me Your Ears is sold separately and in a pack with the guides (see Related Items below).
Recommendations: This book is especially recommended for the following students. These should not be viewed as restrictions; this course can profitably be used by high-school students of any grade regardless of which previous Lightning Literature courses they have completed:
- Students new to Lightning Literature in any high-school grade
- Students still struggling with the basics of writing
- Students interested in history
- Students who prefer to read many smaller pieces rather than book-length works
