P.A.S.S. Test

What is the P.A.S.S Test?

The P.A.S.S. (Personalized Achievement Summary System) Test is a standardized test that has been administrated over 350,000 times. Its popularity among homeschooling families is due primarily to two characteristics.
  1. It is a non-timed test. This reduces or eliminates the test anxiety often arising around standardized testing.
  2. Because not all students are at the same level in any particular grade, it incorporates a pretest to determine the most appropriate level test to administer in each of the three subjects (Reading, Math, and Language). When tests are scored, the student’s responses to the specific level tests they took are then used to generate a report, which includes a comparison of the student to others in their same grade, as well as some specific recommendations.

PASS FAQs

The P.A.S.S. is designed for students in grades 3-8. You will also be marking “beginning”, “middle”, or “end” of year on the scantron to match your situation. This allows for students who school year round or at different paces to still be compared to others of the same level.

$42 for one test
$39 each for 2-9 tests
$34 each for 10-19 tests
$30 each for 20+ tests

Please use the Group Test spreadsheet to order tests for more than one family at a time.

You will receive all the necessary materials in your testing packet. When you receive it:

  1. Read and follow the instructions in the Instructions for Using Levels packet.
  2. Follow the instructions book to give the Placement Test. Students may mark their answers on the Placement Test itself.
  3. Grade the Placement Test (answers are on the back side of the front page of the placement test).
  4. Use the guidelines in the instructions book for deciding the correct levels.
  5. Prepare the Scantron answer sheet by filling in the date, school year, and levels boxes.
  6. Give the test.
  7. Follow instructions for returning the test to Hewitt. Please make sure to sign the disposal verification sheet.

For each student you wish to test, we must have their name and the grade you want the student compared with, the parent(s)’ name(s) and mailing address, a telephone number, an email address help if any last-minute problems arise, and your testing date. Since you have 30 days from your testing date to complete the test and return the scantron, we will hold your order and ship the materials so you receive them in time for your anticipated testing date. If you leave the testing date blank we will assume you plan to test soon and will ship immediately.

Full payment is required with each order, and is nonrefundable once it is shipped. Individual orders (for students from one family) may be ordered online. Group orders (those involving students from two or more families) and those where you are not the parent/guardian of the student must be ordered using group orders.

To order you have a few options:

  • Give us a call at (360) 835-8708.
  • Email us at CustomerService@hewitthomeschooling.com
  • Purchase through our web store.

We have students all over the world who use the PASS test. The states of New York, North Carolina, Washington, and Alaska have approved the PASS for purposes of state reporting. In other states which require testing, many school districts accept the test, but you should check with your local school district before relying on it.

While the test itself is untimed, there is a limit for how long you can hang on to the test. Due to test integrity, you will need to return the test within 30 days. We use the anticipated testing date you enter when you order to allow for maximum flexibility.

Once the test has been returned, we will score it and send you a detailed analysis of the student’s performance.

Absolutely! Just enter your anticipated testing date when you order. We will hold your order and ship the package out in time for you to test within the 30 day time frame.

We also recommend testing twice yearly so that you obtain a more accurate measure of achievement. Our normal testing schedule is October and April. PASS Tests can be ordered at any time during the year, but they must be at least six months apart.

The P.A.S.S. can be taken during the beginning, middle, or end of school year.  Students may test up to twice a year, with at least 6 months between tests.

The PASS (Personalized Achievement Summary System), published by Hewitt Learning, provides both a “National Percentile” (%tile) and a “Hewitt Percentile”.

The “Hewitt Percentile” score compares your student’s performance to a representative sample of other PASS taking students in the same grade.

While the PASS is a paper-based, untimed assessment often used by homeschool families and private educators, the “National Percentile” rankings are not based solely on other PASS test-takers. Instead, the PASS was normed against the Metropolitan Achievement Test (MAT)—a widely used, nationally standardized test administered in schools across the United States.

This means:

  • A student’s National Percentile on the PASS reflects how their performance compares to students nationwide, not just other PASS users.
  • These national norms ensure that PASS results provide meaningful insight into your child’s academic progress relative to typical students at the same grade level.

If you have questions about how to interpret your student’s scores, please feel free to contact us.

The PASS Test was developed specifically for home schoolers. It has certain similarities to other achievement tests in that it estimates student achievement in the subjects of reading, language, and math. But is has important differences. It introduces four major improvements over most achievement tests presently available:

  • It was designed for parents to administer at home. This can greatly reduce the stress level of testing. We do not require that a certified teacher administer it.
  • It is untimed, which helps students to relax.
  • The student’s approximate achievement level within his or her grade is initially identified by use of a brief accompanying placement test. This assigns each child to a test level where he or she is more likely to succeed, and it also allows for shorter tests. On most achievement tests, where the difficulty of the items varies greatly, students are frequently presented with items that are either too easy or too hard, creating problems in assessing academic achievement.
  • Testing results show overall achievement as well as performance in each subject. The test is standardized and children’s scores are compared with both national and home-schooling populations. This does not mean that the test is nationally normed, but that the scores are equated to those of public school students taking one of the nationally-normed tests.

The full timeline can vary depending on shipping and how quickly you return your test, but here’s a general overview:

  • For individual families, we ship your PASS order within 2–3 business days of receiving it.
  • For group orders, please allow 1–2 weeks for processing.

Shipping times (via USPS) currently range from 3–10 days for materials to arrive.

Once you receive your test, you’ll have 30 days to complete it and mail back the Scantron and verification of disposal. After we receive your completed test, we typically grade it within 2–3 business days.

  • If you selected emailed results, we will send them as soon as grading is complete.
  • If you selected printed results by mail, we’ll mail them within 1-2 business days of grading. USPS delivery times range from 3–10 days.

So, while the testing and grading process itself is fairly quick, the total turnaround time can vary depending on how quickly you complete and return the test and on current USPS delivery speeds.
