Lightning Lit: World Lit

World Lit 1

As with most Lightning Lit courses, World Lit I is based on four book-length works and four shorter works.  In the case of this course, all four units which use shorter works focus on poetry from around the world drawn from This Same Sky edited by Nomi Shihab Nye.  Three of the four book-length works come from Nigeria, Japan, and Egypt.  For the fourth book, students choose an autobiography by a writer from Africa or Asia from a list provided in the course materials.  This course is written from a Christian perspective; students are assumed to hold Christian beliefs.  Also, in “Cultural Lessons” which are part of most lessons alongside instruction on writing skills, as well as throughout the course, direct comparisons are made between the societies depicted in the works of literature and “Western” culture.

World Lit 2

This course is based on four book-length works from India, Chile, China, and Lebanon.  It also contains four units on shorter works.  These generally focus on groups of short stories from the same countries or regions represented by the longer works.  The stories in each of the four units which use short works are drawn from Other Voices, Other Vistas edited by Barbara H. Solomon.  This course is written from a Christian perspective; students are assumed to hold Christian beliefs.  In “Culture and Worldview” sections, which appear in each unit based on book-length works and throughout the course, “Western” culture is directly compared and contrasted with and material contained in the works of literature.
