Description

The Story of My Life was originally published in 1902; this edition also includes a full selection of Helen Keller’s letters, an introduction by Jim Knipfel, a facsimile of the braille alphabet, and a sign-language alphabet. It is part of Hewitt’s Grade-7 Lightning Literature program. From our Guide by Elizabeth Kamath:

Helen wrote this book while attending Radcliffe. She was the first blind and deaf woman to attend a college or university.

After Helen graduated, she wasn’t certain what she wanted to do. Many people wanted her to open a school for the blind, but Helen believed that the blind and deaf should not be separated from the rest of society. Helen did continue to write after publishing her first book. She wrote several articles and over the years would also write more books—almost all of them about her life. Helen wrote and tried to publish articles on other topics, but publishers were only interested in her writings about herself.
